Americans Defeat Britons in Hurdles and 100

Allen Johnson overtook record-holder Colin Jackson of Britain to win the 110-meter hurdles Wednesday at the IAAF Grand Prix Golden Gala track meet in Rome, finishing in 13.23 seconds. Jackson was first out of the blocks but clipped several hurdles. He finished fourth, in 13.33, behind Americans Jack Pierce and Courtney Hawkins.

Also at the meet, American sprinter Dennis Mitchell led from the start and finished in 10.05 seconds to hand reigning Olympic champion Linford Christie of Britain his first loss of the season at 100 meters.

Four season’s bests were turned in, including Noureddine Morceli’s 3:30.94 in the 1,500, one of four outdoor events in which the Algerian holds the world record.

College Basketball

Marcus Camby, who has opted to forego his senior season at Massachusetts to try to play in the NBA, filed a criminal complaint in Hartford, Conn., regarding allegations he was blackmailed by a would-be agent who tried to woo him as a client.

Football

Dallas Cowboy owner Jerry Jones said wide receiver Michael Irvin, indicted on charges of drug possession, has an opportunity to show how to atone for a bad mistake and added that he expects Irvin in training camp in July. Irvin faces a June 24 trial.

Quarterback Jim Miller and the Pittsburgh Steelers agreed to a three-year contract extension worth at least $6.35 million. If he becomes the starter, the contract’s value becomes $11.45 million.

Tackle Jim Lachey, who made the Pro Bowl three times, will retire from the Washington Redskins at 33.

Michigan and Wisconsin have agreed to home-and-home games with Oregon.

Basketball

Jermaine O’Neal, a 17-year-old from Eau Claire High in South Carolina who said last month he wanted to go to college if he could qualify, did not take the Scholastic Assessment Test on his final chance and apparently will be available for the NBA draft on June 26.

The Southeastern Conference approved medical hardship status for Kentucky senior forward Jared Prickett, giving him an additional year of eligibility.

If Charles Barkley plays basketball next season, it likely won’t be in Phoenix. Barkley said in an NBC interview that he has no desire to play with a team that was “shopping me around all summer.”

My Flag, winner of the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies, will try to duplicate an accomplishment of her sire, Easy Goer, and win Saturday’s Belmont Stakes.

Driver Alessandro Zampedri, who has had five operations after being seriously injured in a crash on the final lap of the Indianapolis 500, faces months of rehabilitation, but doctors say he will probably walk and race again. In one of the operations, part of Zampedri’s left foot was amputated and a muscle was moved from his shoulder to his foot.

Boxer Tommy Collins, a 123-pounder who fought four world champions in a span of 13 months and was a favorite in Boston, died at 67 after a brief illness. . . . Picabo Street, who has won consecutive World Cup downhill titles in addition to the world championships gold medal in downhill, headlines the 1996-97 U.S. ski team roster.
