The strike of 6,700 machinists at McDonnell Douglas’ St. Louis plant entered its second day with no new talks planned. . . . Kmart boosted the size of a $750-million bond offering and closed the deal early because of heavy demand, which the troubled retailer said reflects confidence it can turn the operation around. . . . The New York Stock Exchange named William R. Johnston president and chief operating officer. . . . U.S. Office Products said it has reached agreements to acquire 48 companies for stock and cash totaling $348 million.
