The Graduates, 1996

Share

The future is always just around the corner, but a leap in centuries is in store for this year’s high school graduates: Many of those heading off to college will be members of another graduating class, the Class of 2000.

As they prepare to move on--to college, into the workplace or military service, away from home--the members of the Class of ’96 will take their high school experiences into the next century. Their interests are as varied as their accomplishments.

Some have worked to build an appreciation for cultural diversity, to be companions to lonely senior citizens, to help feed the less fortunate or to raise funds for disaster victims. Others have set spirits soaring with their art, music and theater talents. Most have worked hard to better their communities and themselves, often overcoming personal obstacles. Some have faced death in the family, a parent losing a job or personal health problems. Others have gone from speaking no English to excelling in honors courses or are the first in their families to graduate from high school and head for college.

For its fifth annual Salute to High School Seniors, The Times invited Orange County high schools to nominate students who have distinguished themselves in the areas of leadership, academics and the arts. From those nominees, one student from each school was chosen to be featured in today’s edition--students who may or may not be their school’s “top” student but who, by their involvement and accomplishments, seem to especially represent the hopes of the future.

The Times salutes these students and their classmates who form Orange County’s graduating class of 1996.
