No Sympathy for This Oxnard Tenant

* Regarding “Eviction Notice: A Less-Forgiving Landlord for Public Housing” (June 3):

I suppose I am supposed to read this article and feel sorry for Fernando Melgoza. After all, he has been in this country for 16 years, feeds from the public trough and has yet to learn enough English to read his overdue rent notice from the Oxnard Housing Authority.

In addition I read that Mr. Melgoza has eight children. Since his rent is $211 and represents 30% of his salary (that would be $763 a month) I would suggest that if perhaps he had fewer children, maybe he would be able to pay his rent and buy clothes and shoes for his children.

If Mr. Melgoza were living in nonpublic housing and repeatedly did not pay his rent he would be summarily evicted. I see no reason why the same should not be the case in public housing, especially when the article indicates there are others waiting for such an opportunity.

That my tax dollars are going to subsidize housing for him and others like him infuriates me to no end.
