Balboa’s Buttercup Wins Challenge Cup

Buttercup, led by skipper David Ullman of Balboa Yacht Club, won its fifth consecutive Sir Thomas Lipton Challenge Cup Sunday off the coast of Newport Beach.

Buttercup finished the five-race event held over two days with 10.25 points. Wings, skippered by Dennis Conner of the San Diego Yacht Club, was second at 13.75.

Alden Glickman of the Ventura Sailing Club led Troublemaker to a third-place finish with 15.75 points.

The final two races were Sunday.

The Long Beach Sharks swept the Orange County Diggers, 15-2, 15-4, 15-13, in a National Grass League women’s volleyball match Sunday at El Dorado Park in Long Beach.

Lori Yust had 14 kills for Long Beach (2-2) and Mieka Wagner had nine for the Diggers.

Ernest and Chris Schoop of Pacific Palisades won the USTA National Father and Son Hardcourt Doubles Tennis Championship Sunday at Newport Beach Tennis Club in Newport Beach.

The Schoops rallied to beat Bill and Kurt Streng of Michigan, 5-7, 6-3, 6-2.
