OREGON : Church Is Damaged in Arson Attack

Share
From Times Staff and Wire Reports

An arson attack destroyed the sanctuary of a predominantly black church in Portland, Ore., the first such fire in the Northwest since national attention focused on a wave of burnings across the South. Investigators refused to speculate on whether the blaze at Immanuel Christian Fellowship was racially motivated, or a copycat of the 40 or so fires at churches in the South since January 1995.
