NATION IN BRIEF : SOUTH CAROLINA : Admissions Battle Takes Toll on Citadel

The Citadel’s battle to keep women out of the all-male military college has taken its toll: Student admissions and income are down. The dropping numbers are a concern, said Jimmy Jones, chairman of the Citadel’s Board of Visitors, but “we’re not going down the tubes.” The college is waiting for a U.S. Supreme Court decision in the dispute. A discrimination suit was filed against the school after it accepted and then rejected a student upon learning she was a woman. The student, Shannon Faulkner, won admission but later dropped out. Another student, Nancy Mellette, is taking Faulkner’s place in the lawsuit.
