Two members of Cuba’s Olympic boxing team deserted during training in Guadalajara, Mexico, the state-run news agency said. Light heavyweight Ramon Garbey and 125-pounder Joel Casamayor, both 22 and considered strong gold-medal contenders, slipped away during the 12-member team’s free time, said Miguel Barrientos, a spokesman for the boxing squad. . . . Linford Christie, still saying he is undecided on whether he will defend his Olympic title, won the 100 meters at the BUPA Games in Gateshead, England. “I’m going to wait until tomorrow,” Christie, 36, said after his easy victory in 10.16 seconds. World triple jump record-holder Jonathan Edwards, who sat out the British trials because of injury, will be named to the team today after winning his event with his first jump of 55 feet. 10 1/4 inches. . . . South Korea reportedly will help impoverished North Korea with its travel expenses to the Atlanta Olympics in response to an IOC request. The Chosun Ilbo newspaper, quoting government sources, said the South Korean donation will be less than $1 million.
