Plane Down: A Riverside man and a San Bernardino man died early Friday when their World War II plane crashed near the Santa Paula Airport. (B1) . . . The crash occurred within 150 yards of the Santa Clara Street site where a plane struck two homes in 1992. Witnesses said the 1942 Ryan trainer appeared to have engine trouble before it dropped into the brush short of a runway.

ER Flap: The Westlake Medical Center emergency room that closed Tuesday had a license to continue operating until today, according to health officials. (B1) . . . Though a court eventually ordered the owner to keep the popular facility open, Westlake administrators say they are not in violation because the ER had already closed. And the fact that the license had not yet expired, they say, has no bearing.

Deputy Knuckles: OK, Tarzan, the next time a female sheriff’s deputy starts to write you a ticket and you feel like playing King of the Jungle, better get a clue. Thousand Oaks Deputy Wendy Aulino just won a gold medal at the Police Olympics for boxing. She took up the sport only a little over three months ago, but she won every fight by unanimous decision. Next month she’s off to the Nevada Games, where she expects the same results. “I’ve never been in better shape in my life,” she says.

Free Bikes: Showing their faith in human nature, members of the Ojai Bicycle Coalition reconditioned 20 bikes, painted them bright yellow and left them around town with signs inviting tourists to hop on and see the sights. They were pretty popular. So popular that a day after the program started, only a few of the two-wheelers could be found. (B1)
