Chinese Dissidents in Hong Kong
Your July 1 article neglected to mention that there are 80 people in Hong Kong who are in absolute jeopardy when China takes control. They are individuals who supported the pro-democracy movement of 1989 and escaped to Hong Kong or were expelled by the Chinese government. I am one of those people.
I was a student in Shanghai when I became one of the leaders in the pro-democracy activities in that city. I was captured and served a year in jail before I was expelled to Hong Kong. Because of my background, I had difficulty finding a job; finally a U.S.-based company hired me. Early this year, some Chinese agents visited the company; I was later asked by my company to choose between my job or continuing my pro-democracy activities. I chose my dignity, my principle and my self-respect. I am now studying at Cal State L.A., but I shall have to leave California to find a school I can afford. As an exile, I mourn for Hong Kong.
