ITT Hartford, Occidental Settle Love Canal Dispute: Occidental Petroleum Corp. and ITT Hartford Corp. announced the settlement of their 18-year legal dispute, with the insurance company agreeing to partially reimburse Occidental’s estimated $1-billion cleanup of chemical waste dumped near Love Canal in New York during the 1940s and 1950s by Occidental’s corporate predecessor, Hooker Chemical. As part of the undisclosed, out-of-court settlement, Westwood-based Occidental agreed to end its lawsuit against ITT Hartford. ITT Hartford, based in Hartford, Conn., said the settlement will have no material impact on its finances because it was anticipated. Occidental also settled with Lloyd’s of London last month to recover reimbursement for cleanup costs.
