Kids Activities Offered in Drop-In Program

Club Los Alamitos, a weekday drop-in program for children 6 to 12 years old, is offering arts and crafts classes, sports events, games and skits at four locations.

The free playground sessions are from 11:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Mondays through Fridays at Little Cottonwood Park, 4000 Farquhar Ave.; Orville R. Lewis Jr. Park, 3662 Kempton Drive; and Laurel High School, 10291 Bloomfield St.

The club also is offered from 11:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays at Labourdette Park, 4401 Howard St. Each site is staffed by two city recreation workers.

Parents may drop off their children, or youngsters may walk or ride their bicycles to the clubs. Children are free to come and go as they please, said Bill Calkins, the city’s recreation supervisor. The four clubs will run through Aug. 16.

Other Recreation and Community Service Department programs this summer include a roller hockey camp, adult dance nights, a family swim meet and a senior club.

The roller hockey sports camp for youngsters in third through eighth grade starts this week at McAuliffe Middle School, 4112 Cerritos Ave.

The one-week session is for beginning and intermediate players. Participants must provide their own in-line skates, helmets with face guards, gloves and elbow and knee pads. The cost is $21.

Social dances for adults are from 8:30 to 11:30 p.m. Fridays at the Community Center, 10911 Oak St. Ballroom dancing is the theme on the first, second and fourth Fridays of each month, and country dancing on third Fridays. Admission is $3.

The family swim meet will be from 11:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. July 27 at the pool at Los Alamitos High School, 3591 Cerritos Ave. Admission is free, with lunch of a hot dog, chips and a drink available for $3.

Residents 50 and older may join the Senior Citizens’ Club, which meets from 10 a.m. to 3:15 p.m. Thursdays at the Community Center.

The annual fee is $5.
