Georgia officials said they will immediately begin towing abandoned vehicles on Atlanta’s freeways as part of an Olympics-related crackdown on passenger and truck traffic aimed at reducing the threat of terrorism.

“Oklahoma City, New York and Saudi Arabia were specific threats. We don’t want to see that happen here,” said Sid Miles, commander of the Georgia State Patrol. “We’re taking all precautions to make sure nothing like that ever does happen here.”

He was referring to fatal bomb attacks on a federal building in Oklahoma City, the World Trade Center in New York City, and a facility housing U.S. troops in Saudi Arabia.

Much of the city’s freeway system is under camera surveillance and authorities have set up a system to dispatch rescue trucks to make minor car repairs and provide fuel.

Truckers without a delivery or pickup in the city are required by law to use the highway that circles Atlanta instead of the freeway that passes through the city center, said Georgia Transportation Commissioner Wayne Shackleford.
