From Times Staff and Wire Reports
A volunteer firefighter who helped battle a blaze that destroyed a rural black church in 1994 has been charged in Columbia, S.C., with starting the fire. James Isaac Mitchell, 22, of Buffalo, S.C., was arrested and jailed on arson charges. He was held on $50,000 bond. Investigators said Mitchell entered Rice’s Chapel Church in Buffalo the morning of Sept. 8, started the fire with a candle and then returned with the community Fire Department to fight the blaze.
