On a night when back spasms sidelined captain Bob Ctvrtlik and only six weeks after breaking his right hand, Brett Winslow came on in the fourth set and helped fire up Team USA, which beat Bulgaria, 15-13, 15-13, 4-15, 15-7, in San Diego.

After being routed in the third set, Team USA trailed, 5-2, in the fourth when Winslow, a 6-foot-5 middle blocker, replaced Jeff Nygaard and responded with a couple of quick kills for sideouts, but his big contribution was jumping around like a little kid, which seemed to fire up the team.

Bulgaria extended its lead to 7-2, but the Americans came alive and scored the final 13 points.
