LIBYA : At Least 8 Die in Riot at Soccer Match
At least eight people reportedly were killed during a soccer match as bodyguards for leader Moammar Kadafi’s son fired at spectators who were racing onto the field and shouting anti-Kadafi slogans. Some in the crowd shot back, one diplomat said, and rioting reportedly spread to the streets after spectators stampeded out of the stadium in Tripoli, the Libyan capital. Diplomats and opposition leaders said last week’s disturbance began when fans objected to a referee’s call that they considered biased in favor of a team promoted by Kadafi’s son Al Saadi. Libya’s state-run television reported that eight people were killed, although diplomats put the death toll at 20 or more.
