Teamster Leader Loses Key Votes to Rival: Teamsters President Ron Carey suffered further setbacks at the hands of challenger James P. Hoffa, losing key votes on convention rules and a proposal to restore the membership of local union leaders who retaliated against a critical rank-and-file member. Hoffa’s campaign manager, Tom Pazzi, said the votes show that Hoffa has a very good chance of defeating Carey in the union’s November elections. But he said that “we don’t think we’ve got it in the bag.” Teamsters Vice President Aaron Belk, a Carey ally, said that the votes send “a really bad signal to the members of this union and everyone that’s watching.” But Belk also called the votes a sign that the union’s reform process is working. The Teamsters convention is being held this week in Philadelphia.
