U.S-China Relations

Re “U.S. Envoy Tries to Repair Ties With China,” July 10:

All the conflicts in the U.S.-China relationship can be traced to one central factor--the Chinese regime is totalitarian with imperial arrogance. Its sole goal is to preserve power and control at any cost. What is incredible is that the world has not found the courage and integrity to induce any improvement in the regime’s behavior. Issues of arms proliferation, intellectual properties, market access, human rights and Taiwan will remain points of conflict as long as we are dealing with a totalitarian regime. With a regime that only respects power, the Clinton administration’s policy of supplication has proven to be a total failure.

National security advisor Anthony Lake’s visit to Bejiing will definitely be a boost to President Jiang Zemin in his succession struggle. And if the regime can induce President Clinton or Vice President Gore to visit Bejiing, it would be a seal of legitimacy. Wonder what the U.S. will get for that? Is there a secret deal being worked out that damages our national interests?

The covert selling of firearms is yet another example of violation of our national interest. The arms have been killing innocent Americans. While it may not intend to violently overthrow the U. S. government, certainly it causes civil disturbance in our cities.
