From Times Staff and Wire Reports

More than 40 congressional Republicans sued President Clinton and his defense secretary, accusing them of disregarding Congress’ intent on missile-defense policy. The civil lawsuit, filed in U.S. District Court, seeks to force Clinton and Defense Secretary William J. Perry to move more quickly in developing theater-based missile defense systems designed to protect troops and ships against short- and medium-range threats. At issue is a broad defense measure Clinton signed into law in February. The law sets targets for developing the missile defense systems, with an initial deadline in 1998.
