NATIONWIDE : Panel Backs Study of Gaming Industry

The Senate voted to create a commission with a broad mandate to examine the rapid growth of gambling in America, putting the legislation on track for passage despite months of efforts by the gambling industry to limit the panel’s powers. The bill, approved by voice vote, is similar to one approved earlier by the House, and sources said speedy agreement on a final version is anticipated. President Clinton supports the measure.
