Umphrey Deprived of All-Around

Chainey Umphrey says he’ll make the best of a U.S. Olympic team decision that would keep him from competing in the men’s all-round finals.
Umphrey was notified over the weekend that he would probably compete in only four of six men’s events, excluding the vault and high bar. Jair Lynch, who finished two spots behind Umphrey in the Olympic trials, would compete in all six events. That would exclude Umphrey from the all-round finals, while making Lynch eligible.
“This is one of the most disappointing turns of events in my life I can ever remember,” Umphrey said, then added, “I’m willing to sacrifice my dream, as painful as it may be right now.”
