OLYMPICS DAILY REPORT : Appeal Made on Ugandan’s Behalf

A Ugandan heavyweight boxer charged with passing counterfeit banknotes faces exclusion from the Olympics after a judge ordered him to be confined to the athletes’ village.

Anwar Chowdhry, president of the International Amateur Boxing Assn. (AIBA), said that he had asked the judge to reconsider the terms of bail and allow Bakule Charles Kizza to compete.

“He has been given the punishment of not leaving the village. This means he cannot compete in the tournament because that would be outside of the village,” Chowdhry said.

The boxing venue at the Alexander Memorial Coliseum is just on the other side of the village perimeter fence.

Kizza was charged with passing fake $100 bills after he tried to buy clothing in a store, law enforcement officials said.

Kizza was released on $10,000 bail and ordered to surrender his passport, stay in the village and report back for a preliminary hearing on Aug. 5, the day after the Game end.

Domestic assault and battery charges against Olympian David Reid, a light middleweight, were dropped.

“I was innocent all along,” said Reid, accused of assaulting a female friend in a motel room in Orlando, Fla. “Now I don’t have to worry about going to court while I’m boxing in the Olympics.”
