Brazilian Woman Cleared to Compete

Brazilian Ednanci Silva passed a femininity test, the Brazilian Olympic Committee (COB) said, and has has been cleared by the International Olympic Committee’s medical commission to take part in the women’s heavyweight category of the Olympic judo competition, which begins today.

The COB said Silva, 19, suffered from an excess of male hormones but that Brazilian doctors would not elaborate out of consideration for Silva’s privacy.

Brazilian sources said she had been taking part in female judo events in Brazil regularly until May when the media reported that she had undergone surgery to reduce levels of testosterone.
