From Times Staff and Wire Reports

Holding Bibles and pink and white crosses, about 125 abortion opponents rallied peacefully outside a Wichita, Kan., clinic blockaded by protesters in 1991. Protesters wearing “Pro-Life” and “Jesus Is the Standard” T-shirts sang and prayed while nine city police officers stood guard. In 1991, authorities made more than 2,600 arrests during six weeks of protests at the Women’s Health Care Services clinic. “In 1991, I got here by 6:30 a.m. and by 8 a.m. I was in jail,” said Flip Benham, executive director of the Dallas-based Operation Rescue National.
