BRCKO, Bosnia-Herzegovina — A U.S. warplane on a training exercise accidentally dropped a 500-pound bomb Saturday near an American army base in rural northeastern Bosnia. No one was hurt, U.S. Army officers said.
The bomb loosed by the carrier-based F-18 jet exploded about 660 feet from the base, which is part of the NATO-led force in Bosnia-Herzegovina.
The bomb hit an earthen embankment and blew away the top third of it.
Shrapnel battered a nearby sandbagged combat position maintained by U.S. troops, who were not at the post.
