Escaping the tumult of Atlanta, Michael Johnson went home to Texas. The man who intends to be “the story of the Olympics” needs a little peace and quiet to make final preparations for his attempt to be the first man to win the gold medal in the 200 and 400 meters.

He’ll be back Wednesday, two days before the first round of the 400 qualifying on the opening day of track and field competition at Olympic Stadium.

“I think if I go back to Texas I can focus on training and not all of the crowds and all the things that go along with the Olympics,” said Johnson, who lives in Dallas. “It’s really crowded here and everything is pretty hectic.”
