Bomb Found on Runway at O’Hare Airport
A security guard found a crude pipe bomb on the runway of an air charter service at O’Hare International Airport Sunday night, officials said.
The device was detonated safely by the city bomb and arson squad.
The airport was already on heightened security alert after an anonymous 911 call about 9:30 a.m. The caller said there was a bomb on a Mexicana Airlines flight to Mexico.
A flight that had just taken off from the airport for Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, was returned to O’Hare, said Megan Hughes, a city aviation spokeswoman. The passengers were evacuated, but no explosives were found, officials said.
Chicago Fire Department Battalion Chief Leslie Noy said a Delta Air Lines flight was also searched about 11:30 a.m. after a threatening call was received by Delta officials in Boston. No bomb was found.
