Australia’s Diamond Misfires Only Once
Michael Diamond gave Australia its first medal in Olympic shooting since 1900, winning the championship in trap.
Diamond, a liquor-store clerk, came within one shot of a perfect score--hitting an Olympic-record 149 of 150 targets through six rounds--to beat Americans Josh Lakatos of Pasadena and Lance Bade of Ridgefield, Wash.
Lakatos won the silver in a shoot-off after he and Bade finished tied for second with scores of 147. It took 28 shots in the shoot-off before Bade missed the 4-inch clay target and settled for the bronze.
Olga Klochneva, 28, a recent college graduate and soon-to-be lieutenant in the Russian army, set an Olympic record with a score of 490.1 in winning the gold in the women’s 10-meter air pistol, beating teammate and defending Olympic champion Marina Logvinenko.

China’s Wang Yifu, who collapsed after a last-shot error cost him the air pistol gold medal Saturday, was probably a victim of Atlanta’s heat, Games organizers said Sunday.
“He was checked by the medical staff on site and he is very stable,” a statement from chief medical officer John Cantwell read.
Wang is scheduled to compete Tuesday in the 50-meter free pistol event.
