Quebec Floods Kill 10, Destroy Homes

Flash floods killed at least 10 people and caused hundreds of millions of dollars in infrastructure damage in the province of Quebec, officials said. About 10,000 people were forced from their homes by the weekend flooding, which has largely subsided. The flooding affected a vast area stretching from the Saguenay region to Sept-Iles, 400 miles northeast of Quebec City along the north shore of the St. Lawrence River. Dozens of homes, including an apartment building, were swept away. “It was worse than I expected,” said Canadian Prime Minister Jean Chretien, who flew by helicopter over the region.
