Evangelist Gets 16 Months in Prison
From Times Staff and Wire Reports
A Texas televangelist who made a fortune from his weekly sermons was sentenced to 16 months in prison and fined $30,000 for tax evasion. Walter Grant Jr., the 50-year-old founder and pastor of the Church of Compassion near Dallas, previously pleaded guilty but tried to reverse his plea at the last minute. U.S. District Judge Joe Kendall refused to allow it. Prosecutors said Grant evaded taxes on more than $300,000.
