U.S. Women Win Team Gymnastics

Kerri Strug nailed her final vault before collapsing in pain as the U.S. won its first team gold in Olympic women’s gymnastics.

Strug was carried out of the Georgia Dome in Atlanta on a stretcher before the competition ended Tuesday, unaware that the Americans had finished with 389.225 points, .821 points in front of the Russians. As it turned out, the American women didn’t even need Strug’s points after pulling far enough ahead of the Russians.

Americans won three golds in swimming: Jeff Rouse in the 100-meter backstroke, Amy Van Dyken in the 100-meter butterfly and the men’s 400-meter freestyle relay. Irvine’s Amanda Beard won her second silver medal, in the 200-meter backstroke.
