Ireland’s Sonia O’Sullivan, a favorite next week in the 1,500 and 5,000 meters, doesn’t have a problem with the weather in Atlanta.

“I got here yesterday and I’ve been for two runs and it’s no different than running anywhere,” she said Wednesday. “I think there was so much emphasis put on the heat and the humidity that I expected it to be so much hotter and so much worse. But it’s fine.”

Swimmer Tom Dolan, who has asthma, has found the Georgia Tech Aquatic Center, to be hot, sticky and stifling at times.

“I was definitely gasping for air,” Dolan said after his first victory. “I was glad that wall was there.”

Temperatures on the sand reached 121 degrees at the beach volleyball venue in suburban Jonesboro. . . . For the second time in three days, a thunderstorm forced postponement of many yachting races in Savannah. During the storm, winds blew at 14 knots and there were three-foot swells.
