Antiguan Competitor Shaken Up When Olympic Bus Has Accident
An Antiguan kayaker needed medical treatment Wednesday when the bus she was riding in hit a concrete barrier protecting the road to the Lake Lanier Olympic venue.
It was believed to be the first accident involving injuries connected with the Olympic transport system, which has been harshly criticized for its inefficiency and inexperienced drivers.
Heidi Lehrer, 30, had been at the rowing-canoe-kayak venue practicing for events that start Tuesday. She was on her way back to the Olympic Village when the bus driver “misjudged the clearance and struck the barrier,” said Capt. Ken Grogan of the Hall County Sheriff’s Department.
The collision caused some damage to the bus, and Lehrer was the only person on board who of complained of pain after the accident.
She was taken to Northeast Georgia Medical Center for X-rays because of back pain and was treated and released, hospital officials said.
Lehrer then returned to the Olympic Village.
