GAMES HAVE LEFT THE BUILDING

Are these Games in Atlanta, or Memphis?

Elvis Presley, in the embodiment of impersonators, is hard to avoid. One of the most, um, interesting is the guy who deep-fries catfish at a restaurant near the rowing venue at Lake Lanier. Mike Jones, a.k.a. Smelvis, removes his apron after dinner, wipes the sweat from his sideburned face, puts on a black leather jacket and does his Elvis shtick.

Then there is the club in the Little Five Points area. The building used to be a bank and the vault has been made into a Presley shrine. Really, a shrine. Besides Elvis records, posters and other memorabilia, there is a kneeler next to a sign asking for donations and promising, “Elvis grants your every wish.” Nearby is a bank of votive candles.
