Sailor Nick Adamson of Newport Beach was up the creek without a boat after his second race at the yachting venue off the coast of Savannah.

After finishing ninth in the first Laser class race, Adamson tacked into the path of an Australian boat during the second race, causing a collision that left a gaping hole in his boat. Adamson couldn’t finish, and his boat is done for the Olympics.

“I was trying to make a mark and there was a pack of boats on starboard tack,” said Adamson, a former UC Irvine sailor. “I got in their way. I had a smart day otherwise.”

Adamson got one of the extra boats officials keep on hand for such emergencies and finished 13th and seventh in his races Wednesday, lifting him from 25th to 12th in the overall standings.
