NBC’s Ratings Still Higher Than Those From Barcelona

NBC’s coverage of the Olympics continues to earn record ratings.

NBC’s prime-time average for Wednesday night was 22.4 with a 41 share, up 19% from the first Wednesday night of the Barcelona Games in 1992. In fact, the 22.4 was better than any prime-time rating for an event in either Barcelona or Seoul in 1988.

NBC Sports Research estimates 94 million people watched all or part of Wednesday night’s telecast, making it the fourth night in a row of at least 90 million viewers.

After six nights, NBC’s prime time average was 22.8 with a 42 share, 25% up from Barcelona over the same period of time.

Israyel Militosian, an Olympic gold medalist in 1992, was among five Armenian weightlifters arrested after trying to force their way into an apartment to reach a woman believed to be a prostitute.

The woman declined to press charges.

After world champion France defeated Algiers in men’s team handball, the teams were escorted out under heavy security and boarded separate buses manned by U.S. marshals.

There was no explanation for the extensive measures. However, Thursday was the one-year anniversary of the bombing of a Paris subway train that killed eight people.

A commuter train overshot a station at the eastern end of Atlanta’s rapid transit system early Thursday, derailing two cars and seriously injuring the operator.

No passengers were on the train, and transit officials said there would be no interruption in service.

The train operator, whose name was not immediately released, was listed in serious condition at DeKalb Medical Center. He suffered a broken jaw, a broken leg and internal injuries.
