In his campaign to repeat as the Olympic triple jump champion, Mike Conley of Fayetteville, Ark., easily qualified Friday for today’s final. But Conley was not nearly as excited about that as the news he received earlier about his son.

Mike Conley II, 8, was named the most valuable player in University of Arkansas Coach Nolan Richardson’s summer basketball camp for boys 11 and under.

“He’s a better shooter than I am, and twice the dribbler,” Conley said.

The young Conley’s reward will be a trip to the Olympics, but not to see his father jump.

“He said he would only come to Atlanta if I got him Dream Team tickets,” Conley said.
