Militant Leader Reportedly Killed

Algeria’s fundamentalist Armed Islamic Group, or GIA, said in a statement that its leader, Djamel Zitouni, alias Abu Abderrahmane Amine, was killed July 16 near Medea, 70 miles south of Algiers, the capital. The GIA has claimed responsibility for some of the most violent actions in the 4-year-old struggle between Muslim militants and Algerian authorities. Meanwhile, gunmen in Algeria shot and killed two police officers in the center of Algiers, witnesses said.
