Archer Paola Fantato, 36, of Italy is competing here after having previously shot in the Paralympics, traditionally held at the Olympic venues several weeks after the Olympics.
Fantato, ranked 30th in the world, shoots from a wheelchair. She had polio when she was 8 months old and can walk only with difficulty. She competes from the wheelchair to steady the bow.
“I knew when I first decided to try for our Olympic team it would be difficult,” Fantato said. “But not impossible.”
Not impossible at all. In her first match Sunday, she was barely outshot by Wang Xiaozhu of China, 636-635.
