South Korean Dominates Again

Merely the thought of a perfect 10 helped Kim Kyung-Wook become the fourth consecutive South Korean to win the Olympic gold medal in women’s archery.

Kim had six 10s, two that hit dead center on the target, and five 9s to beat China’s He Ying, 113-107, in the championship match. Her worst shot was an 8, which came on her 12th and final shot with the gold virtually clinched.

Since 1984, South Korea has won eight of the 12 medals--and all four golds--awarded in women’s individual archery. This, however, was the first year in that span that the South Koreans won only one of the three medals.

Olena Sadovnycha of the Ukraine earned the bronze medal with a 109-102 victory over Turkey’s Elif Altinkaynak.

Janet Dykman of El Monte, the only American to advance to the round of 16, lost, 156-149, to China’s Wang Xiaozhu. Wang was eliminated by Kim in her next match.

“It’s really hard to be disappointed,” Dykman said. “The experience, and even just before the Olympics, all of those years. It’s the journey getting here. This is the fun part.”

Meanwhile, He became only the second women’s archer from China to win an individual medal.
