Court Upholds Order for Couple to Divorce

From Times Wire Reports

In a triumph for lawyers who want to impose Islamic law, Egypt’s highest court upheld a ruling ordering a Muslim professor to divorce his Muslim wife because his writings insulted Islam. The case has been seen as a key challenge by Muslim fundamentalist lawyers. Nasr abu Zeid, 53, and his wife, 38-year-old art history professor Ibtihal Younis, teach at a university in the Netherlands, which said they were out of the country. They have been married for four years and have said in the past that they will not divorce.
