Tamil separatist rebels killed eight soldiers and lost 12 of their men in an ambush Friday as the army’s siege of a rebel stronghold tightened.

The soldiers were hunting for rebel booby traps on a jungle road near Mavil-Aru village when they were attacked by guerrillas armed with grenades and machine guns, said Maj. Tilak Dunuwille, a military spokesman.

Soldiers also strengthened their siege of Kilinochchi, Dunuwille said. They had advanced to about half a mile from the town, 170 miles north of Colombo, he said.
