Wrapping Up Rest of the Games

After watching the Olympics, where I saw more rhythmic gymnastics than boxing, I was not surprised to read the comments of USA Boxing’s Jerry Dusenberry. Boxing was almost completely ignored by NBC, as well it should have been.

The only attention boxing received seemed to be about protests, scoring and bribery. No wonder Ali showed up at a basketball game.

Three cheers for the American sprinter who terminated an interview with an NBC reporter without a word in the face of an inane question designed to provoke him into petty bad sportsmanship. Hats off to Gail Devers, who would not cooperate in letting her competition with Gwen Torrence degenerate into a cat fight. Our political leaders could take a lesson from our 400-meter relay team on how to handle a scandal-mongering press.

As a rabid basketball fan, I eagerly awaited an opportunity to see the Dream Team in action at the Olympics. I finally got a chance in the gold-medal game and it was worth it.

Of course, their skill level, so far above that of the competition, was a large part of what made the Dream Team such fun to watch. But what was really electrifying was the heart and passion with which they played.

I only hope the USA men’s basketball team got to see the game too.

Biggest irony of the 1996 Olympic Games: Yugoslavia’s basketball team mobbing Muhammad Ali with congratulations and praise. These same guys probably won’t even talk to the Muslims they’ve known their whole lives back home.

Since the IOC decided to give Muhammad Ali back the gold medal he lost or threw into the river, does it plan on replacing the gold medal stolen from Roy Jones in the 1988 Games?
