Caring for Children

Lost in the whole welfare reform debate is the fact that staying home and taking care of children is work--probably the most important work in society! The idea of forcing single mothers out into the job market, where there is already significant unemployment and what jobs there are pay at or near the minimum wage, is insane. How can a single mother afford child care when the minimum wage won’t even pay for food and rent?

This country will come to regret this war on poor children because all the present problems, like crime and social decay, will get much worse. Ironically, this is all being done in the name of family values. It boggles the mind!
