Klein to Replace Bingaman as Antitrust Chief: Joel I. Klein, now the No. 2 official in the Justice Department’s antitrust division, will become the acting chief when Anne K. Bingaman returns to the private sector this fall. Klein, 49, has been principal deputy assistant attorney general in the division since April 1, 1995. Before that, he was a deputy White House counsel. Klein’s “efforts in international antitrust enforcement and his command of complex antitrust issues are exemplary,” Bingaman said. “Under his leadership, the division will continue to vigorously enforce the antitrust laws.” Before joining the Clinton administration, Klein was in private practice at Klein, Farr, Smith & Taranto and spent more than 20 years practicing law in Washington.
