Conservative Budget Sparks Violence

Aborigines burned an Australian flag and clashed with police in Canberra in a second day of anti-budget protests only hours before the new conservative government delivered a fiscally tough 1996-97 budget. Treasurer Peter Costello told Parliament that Prime Minister John Howard’s government was seizing a historic opportunity to set Australia on the path to prosperity.
