Edles Hired to Coach UC Irvine Women’s Tennis

Mike Edles, a UC Irvine alumnus, will coach the Anteater women’s tennis team, the school announced Thursday.

He replaces long-time Coach Doreen Irish, whose contract was not renewed. Irish had a record of 347-284 in 23 seasons at Irvine. The Anteaters were 9-15 last season.

Edles, who played at Irvine from 1975-79, was an All-American singles and doubles player. He was a member of the Anteaters’ 1977 Division II national championship team.

His head coaching career began at Cal State Bakersfield in 1979. Edles also has coached at Boise State, Cal State Hayward and Chapman.

At Chapman where he coached the men’s team, Edles was selected the Division II coach of the year in 1986 and ’88. He was chosen the Big Sky Conference coach of the year in 1995 after leading the Boise State women’s team to the Big Sky championship.

Gwen Loud, a Long Beach State assistant track coach, resigned after two seasons.

Loud worked with the 49er horizontal jumpers and was involved in recruiting. A 1995 graduate of Hawaii, Loud won the NCAA long-jump title in 1984.

The Long Beach State athletic department received full certification by the NCAA Committee on Athletic Certification.

Long Beach has shown that it’s in accordance with the NCAA’s operating guidelines, the NCAA said.

Tickets for Game 2 of the Roller Hockey International Western Conference finals between the Bullfrogs and Vancouver Voodoo are on sale now at the Pond of Anaheim box office. The game is scheduled at 7:30 p.m. Sunday. If necessary, Game 3 is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Tuesday.

Kerry O’Bric, a June graduate of Edison High, became a three-time national champion in the heptathlon last week at the AAU-sponsored Junior Olympics in New Orleans.

O’Bric scored 4,847 points in the competition, outdistancing the runner-up by 597 points. She won the high jump at 5 feet 4 1/4, shotput (38-1 1/2), long jump (17-10 1/4), javelin (117-9) and 200 meters (26.35 seconds). She was second in the 100 high hurdles (15.35) and finished the 800 meters in 2 minutes 37 seconds.

O’Bric, who was The Times Orange County girls’ track athlete of the year as a senior, will attend Baylor in the fall.
