Mother Teresa’s condition improved today as she continued her battle against a faltering heart, but doctors said she was still in danger as long as she must depend on a respirator.

“She is slightly better than last night. There are signs of improvement,” said an official at Calcutta’s Woodlands Nursing Home, where the 85-year old Roman Catholic nun has been treated since Tuesday.

Doctors said they wanted gradually to withdraw the respirator, which they said amounted to a life-support system for the missionary and 1979 Nobel Peace Prize winner, who turns 86 on Tuesday.

“Mother Teresa had no further cardiovascular problems during the day, though her heart rate is still irregular,” Dr. S. K. Sen, the nursing home’s medical director, said Sunday evening.

Mother Teresa was admitted to the hospital with a high fever brought on by malaria.
