Killer Gets 19 Years to Life in Murder of Oxnard Man
A 24-year-old Thousand Oaks man was sentenced to 19 years to life in the slaying of Oxnard resident Jose Ortiz last fall, a Superior Court judge ruled Thursday.
Adolfo Antonio Alvarez, who has been held at Ventura County Jail since November in lieu of $250,000 bail, was convicted of murder last month.
His minimum sentence breaks down to 15 years in prison for murder and an additional four years for using a handgun during the crime, Deputy Dist. Atty. Dee Corona said. Alvarez must serve at least 85% of his sentence, she said.
After a two-week trial, a jury found that Alvarez killed Ortiz, 23, with a handgun in an alley outside an Oxnard pool hall in the early morning hours of Nov. 19.
Witnesses said the shooting occurred outside the Q-Club on Oxnard Boulevard after the men had been arguing.
Oxnard police linked Alvarez to the slaying through witness descriptions and a license plate number.
Alvarez was previously charged with conspiracy in planning a 1991 drive-by shooting in Thousand Oaks. That case ended in a hung jury.
