UCI Shuts Out Gonzaga in Soccer

UC Irvine’s strong defense led the Anteaters to a season-opening 1-0 victory over Gonzaga in a soccer game Monday at UC Irvine.
The Anteaters’ goalkeeper Scott Zinser had three saves.
David Szekeres, a senior midfielder, scored on a free kick with about seven minutes left in the game.
In a women’s soccer invitational tournament:
Cal State Fullerton 2, Loyola Marymount 1--Kelly Bogan scored twice for host Fullerton (1-1).
Bogan’s first goal came when she drove home a rebound off a free kick by Barbie Gil 19 minutes into the game. Bogan scored off an assist from Gil about 17 minutes into the second half to put the Titans ahead, 2-0.
Heather Farr scored for Loyola Marymount (0-2) with about 23 minutes left in the game. Suzy Strazzulla had six saves for Fullerton.
San Diego State beat Fresno State, 6-0, Monday to win the tournament with a 2-0 record. Lori LaCoursiere had three goals for San Diego and was selected as the tournament’s most valuable player.
